Beetroot for Kids: Why This Superfood Makes the Perfect Natural Colour

Kids eat with their eyes first. Bright colours make food exciting — which is exactly why so many children's snacks rely on synthetic dyes. At AVERA we wanted the fun of colour without the artificial colouring. The answer was growing in the ground: beetroot.

Where beetroot's colour comes from

Beetroot gets its deep red-purple colour from natural plant pigments called betalains. When fresh beetroot is blended into our cheese cracker dough, those pigments give every piece its soft pink shade. No synthetic colour codes are needed.

What beetroot brings to the table

As a whole vegetable, beetroot is well known for containing:

  • Dietary fibre, which supports healthy digestion.
  • Folate, a B vitamin important for growth.
  • Potassium and other minerals.
  • Natural nitrates and antioxidant pigments that have been widely studied.

A snack is not a substitute for vegetables at meals, of course. But choosing a snack coloured with a real vegetable instead of a synthetic dye is one easy, everyday swap.

5 fun ways to get kids excited about beetroot

  1. Pink pancakes: add a spoon of grated cooked beetroot to the batter.
  2. Magic smoothie: blend a little beetroot with banana and strawberries.
  3. Beet hummus: a bright pink dip for veggie sticks — and for AVERA crackers.
  4. Colour experiments: let kids "paint" with beetroot juice on paper and watch the colour change.
  5. Meet the mascot: our little Beet friend on every AVERA pack makes beetroot a character, not a chore.
Tip for parents: beetroot can naturally tint urine or stool pink after eating larger amounts. It is harmless — and a great science lesson!
